About Vizcaya / Hargraves

The sinking of the Vizcaya was truly tragic. The schooner Cornelius Hargraves, unable to see the Vizcaya because it was nighttime and because the Cornelius Hargraves had no running lights, struck the Vizcaya at full speed, almost cutting her in half. The bowsprit of the Cornelius Hargraves then swept across the deck of the Vizcaya, demolishing everything in its path, including the lifeboats. The Vizcaya sank almost immediately and the Hargraves followed soon after. Although Cornelius Hargraves survivors were able to pick up several Vizcaya passengers, none of the women and children originally on board the Vizcaya survived. The Vizcaya is now a large low debris field with its highest points being the boilers and the engine. Every now and then an artifact is found and it is apparently a good spot for lobsters.
