About Tolten

Although the Tolten was actually a neutral Chilean ship, she was nevertheless torpedoed and sunk by a German submarine early in the Second World War. This period of time was known as 'the Happy Time' by the U-boat crews as their actions off the US coastline were unopposed. The Tolten was actually the Lotta, a Danish ship, which had been taken over by the Chilean government after Denmark fell to Germany. The U-boat captain admitted after the war that he had been unable to see which ship he was firing on in the dark. The U-404 also sunk the Lemuel Burrows the following day but she was removed after the war because she was impeding shipping routes. Most of the remaining structure of this wreck is found at the bow and the stern and the in between area is mostly flattened. The broken bow of the Tolten rises about 20 feet off the bottom. In the stern area there are a few enclosed spaces that can be penetrated. The wreck lies about east-west. Hydroids and anemones abound on this wreck and lobstering is possible along the south edge of the wreck, around the fallen masts and hull plates. Conditions are fantastic although this is generally a cold dive.
