About SS Thurmond Wreck

The Thurmond was a Whale Back Steamer, originally named Colgate Hoylt and then Bay City. On December 25, 1909, (Christmas Day), she left Newport enroute to Maine, along with 3 towing barges. They ran into a storm which resulted the barges cutting loose. The Thurmond managed to save only 5 crew members from the barges, whilst the others were taken with to their watery graves. Minutes later the Thurmond ran aground and sank. Its a easy dive, suitable for all level divers.
