The San Jose, dynamited in the 1950s, currently sits in 100 feet of water on a mud bottom. The wreck is spread over a wide area and the hull, which is almost intact, lies on its port side and forms the main portion of the wreck. The hull can easily be penetrated, leading divers to long corridors with adjacent rooms. The bottom (which consists of silty mud) is easily disturbed and this drops the (normally rather poor) visibility to zero visibility.
