About Rachael Carson Salt Pond

Rachael Carson Salt Pond is known for its great aesthetic value and the chance to dive up to 90 feet or more deep. One can access the site via a small rocky beach into a salt pond and pursue the channel on the right to the ocean. Be sure to check weather forecasts, as the surge can be a nuisance. After a short swim one will encounter a depth of 15 feet and then after a series of drop offs of 20, 40 and 60 feet you will encounter the deeper region of 90 feet. Many small walls are available, each home to many different types of marine life including schools of tommy coy, mackerel and lobsters. Lobstering takes place throughout the date and one should make sure to have a dive flag. Directions are as follow: Take the rt.1 North until you get approach Damriscotta. Follow rt. 130 to rt. 32 and carry on through New Harbour and you will encounter the salt pond, it is just beyond the private road marked Salt Pond road. One can park by the road and suit up there before entering the ocean.
