About Marine Science Center

The OSU Hatfield Marine science center has a well protected bit of cove you can dive. The vis is wildly varied, as the bottom is very silty here. During the winter, the plant life here is non-existent, but during the summer, the whole floor tends to be covered by sea grass and big leafy plants- and the crabs are all over hiding in these is you have a sharp eye. There are a few buoys that are tied to underwater structures. Some larger than others, but many of these structures will be covered in crabs. The pillars of the dock are also good places to see some life. The fingers just down the way have more life, and more variety of life, BUT on those days you with heavy tides, or if they are dredging the jetty, this is protected and usually has very low tide or drift. Also the entry is very easy in and out- you can park right near the site, and no rocks or climbing to get into the spot- unlike fingers, crab dock etc. Nice sandy beach with gentle slops getting in or out.
