About Kaena Point

This site is not accessible from the shore and must be reached by a one hour trip from Waianae Harbour. The steeply inclined shoreline drops off at 200 feet, reaches a plateau, and then drops again, this time to 45 feet. The site is created by black lava boulders and is scattered with coral formations and lava foundations. The drop offs are weakened by caverns, overhangs and many Pukas - many of which are large enough to accommodate a few divers. Many crustaceans, multi-spotted crabs and several types of shells hide in the shallows so a light of some sort is recommended. The very rare leviathan cowry as well as its large cousin the tiger cowry, are both common at this site. At the Point, the bottom drops to 130 feet and passing explorers can get a look at the deeper water here. Caution is advised as the current can be exceptionally strong at times.
