About F.W. Abrams

The Abrams is almost entirely contiguous (except for a break of about 50 feet between the stern and the bow) and lies on its keel. It's a bit risky to jump the gap in low visibility but as the wreck is wide you will eventually reach the other side. As one might expect, navigation is rather tricky in low visibility, especially on the bow. The current seems to come from the bow. The greatest relief on this wreck is on the stern where one can also observe the remains of three boilers and the engine. It is preferable to make at least two trips unless all you want to do is to circumnavigate it. When coming into Ocracoke or Hatteras, the Abrams is ideal as a second dive after diving the Proteus or another wreck in the vicinity. Sharks do not generally visit the area but otherwise the marine life is similar to that found near the Keshena and Dixie Arrow (for example, baitfish or spadefish). The wreck is home to many small tropical fish and is rich in interesting places to explore.
