About Cities Service Empire Wreck

Also known as 'The Ampetco' this long Tanker was built in 1918. She had service for the Belgiun Petroleum Comapny for six years before she was sold to a New York Transportation Company. She was outfitted with on deck guns due to the U boat threats. The Cities Services Empire sank the very first Merchant vessel during WW1. The vessel was the 'Pan Massachusettes' The 22nd february 1942 the 'Cities Services Empire' steamed forth to Cape Canaveral, unaware of the German U 128 Submarine below them. kapitanleutnant Ulrich Heyse, commander of the German U Boat started firing torpedos at the Cities Services Empire. 4 torpedos missed the ship as it continued to steam forth. Eventually 2 torpedos hit the ship followed by a massive explosion. The crew abandoned the ship as it burst out in flames and eventually sank.
