About Caribsea

The wreck of the Caribsea is easy to navigate because it is reasonably small and is contiguous from bow to stern. The most notable sites on the wreck are the bow, the boiler and the engine. This is a fantastic reef for observing marine life as it is usually covered with bait which attracts sharks, amberjacks and other large predators. It is unlikely that the bow will remain standing for long so it would be advisable to visit the wreck soon. The beams which support the upper deck have now given way and the deck has been dropping and twisting to starboard since 1993. More serious damage was caused by storms in 1994. The upper decking has almost completely disintegrated and the windlass twisted and dropped even further, dragging the port anchor onto what used to be the upper deck. The most marine activity occurs above the high point of the bow and just floating above the bow is an entertaining experience because you are surrounded by sandtiger sharks, amberjacks, and schools of bait. The visibility in the fall is reduced to less than one foot by the large schools of bait.

  • Surge-Induced Internal Silt Shift — Internal surge can move silt and debris without direct contact.

  • Partial Overhead Environment — Many wrecks limit direct ascent even without full penetration.

  • Fine Rust Particle Silt-Out — Disturbed rust particles can rapidly reduce visibility.
