Black Sand Beach

This site is 3 miles from Hana in the Wainapanapa State Park. This is the Honokalani Black Sand Beach. The sand is really black but very smooth. If you are bringing your family to this beach, make sure that you try to visit during the summer months. In winter, the surf becomes extremely high, so swimming, surfing, and diving are all very dangerous here. Access is easy, with a parking lot right on the edge of the beach. The beach is great for picnics. You will find restrooms, showers, a paved parking lot, a camping area and there are cabins available. There are some good hiking trails around. You can look and go into sea caves, bridges made of natural stone, and you can look at the old King's Highway. This highway used to encircle the island. When the surf is calm, you can kayak, swim, and scuba dive. Visit the Waiomao caves, a pair of unique lava tubes filled with pure blue and green seawater. Directions: At the South End of Highway 31, bear right onto Wailea Iki. Continue to the T, turn left on Wailea Alanui. After 2.2 miles, turn right onto Makena Road. In 1.6 miles, you'll see the turn-off.
