About The Harbour

Only a two minute walk from the Fins 'n' Flukes dive base is Pangai Harbor. This is a muck dive from the shore with rocky areas to explore on each side of a silty/muddy expanse in the middle with a maximum depth of eight meters. An Acropora reef, on the man made harbor wall foundation, runs parallel to the wharf on the west side of the harbor. Visibility is usually poor but the sheltered location offers calm water and the chance of some surprising animal encounters. There are a couple of moorings in the harbour that attract the critters. It is also possible to exit the harbor to the expansive Acropora reef lying immediately behind the harbor wall where the visibility improves and more abundant life including trevally and Napoleon wrasse (Juveniles) may be encountered. This is a great reef for snorkeling if you have a non-diving partner or if you just fancy an hour on the surface looking down. The Harbor is a dive for the discerning diver who has a keen eye and the experience required to appreciate the subtle diversity offered by this unusual and most often overlooked marine habitat where life struggles for grip in manmade homes facing the constant barrage of time and tide. There is a boat hazard so care must be exercised when surfacing or entering shallower areas.
