About Submarine Base

The location a Japanese WWII submarine base. It lies on Taveui's shoreline next to the vertical reef which the crew would cross to get to the tunnels in the rock face- hundreds of these are located all around Rabaul. This tactic was employed to bring subs as close to shore as possible to lead torpedos. 5m in there is a dizzying sheer drop. At 20 there's a torpedo the line of its course can be seen down the reef face. 52 me is the deepest point here and the vis is incredible. Tons of marine life! At this point it becomes a drift past breathtaking coral of all colours. Black-eye trevally, tuna and jacks are commonplace at the 25 m point and then it gets busy - larger grey reef sharks all over the place! At 6 m there are small clownfish and one can spot hawksbill turtles and wrasse.
