About Kensho Maru

The Kensho Maru lies between Fefan, Tonoas and Weno, Chuuk Lagoon in water depths of 35 metres (130 feet), 24 metres (80 feet) to deck, 18 metres (60 feet) to top of wreck. It is a 4,862 ton passenger / cargo ship, 116 metres (384 feet) long. The visibility in the area is 20 metres (65 feet). It is largely intact. A visit to the bridge reveals the captain's wheel and telegraph as wellas toilets and large engine room. The derricks at the bow are intact and the masts are bedecked with coral. There are also tons of artifacts around the bridge. Entering the lower engine room requires advanced skills. The Kensho Maru originally began to ship supplies from Japan to the Marshall Islands. And soon was fitted armaments and even a small hospital. A US aircraft bombed the ship before Operation Hailstone and flooded the engine room after which the ship ran aground. Further investigation reveals a telegraph on the bow. The holds are mostly empty with hold three elevated. The skylight behind the engine room accesses the galley where you can a wood burning combustion stove as well as crockery, a teapot, pots and pans. The fourth hold has a pump and compressor.
