About Hoyo Maru

The Hoyo Maru lies in 36 metres (118 feet), 3 metres (10 feet) to top of wreck of water near Tonoas, Chuuk Lagoon. She is a 8,691 ton oil tanker, 148 metres (475 feet) in length. The visibility here is 20 metres (65 feet) The wreck lies upside down and can be penetrated from the torpedo hole where you can progress through the engine room and past the bow to the keel. There is wonderful coral growth and reef fish swimming around. In 1941 the Hoyo Maru transported from Chuuk to the Marshall Islands. When recruited, two 8 cm guns were added. In 1942 she took credit for sinking a US submarine 200 miles near Rabaul. In the meanwhile she entered into a fray and needed to be towed in for repairs. While moored she was hit by a barrage of bombs. The deeper you dive her the more there is to see there's a large hole on the starboard and you can see the catwalks and ladders as well as generators and drums in the engine room. You will also spot the anchor chain out and the gun platform at the bow.
