Hoki Maru

The Hoki maru lies near Etten, Chuuk Lagoon in water depth 53 metres (175 feet), 45 metres (150 feet) to deck, 33 metres (110 feet) to top of wreck. It's a 7,112 ton freighter that is 136 metres (450 feet) long. The visibility here is 20 metres (65 feet) The ship is penetrable in hold 3 once can see barrels and bottles wile in 4 there are bulldozers, cars and trucks. Anemone and clownfish abound and the masts are encrusted with soft coral. Originally a cargo vessel built for the Union Steam Ship Company of New Zealand Ltd the in1940 the Hauraki was requisitioned by the British Ministry of War Transport. It only left for Chuuk (Truk) in 1944 with coal, defence materials and supplies. An Allied Avenger torpedoed her form the port side and the fuel oil, petrol and diesel set alight. In hold five there is a bulldozer and a tracked caterpillar-type machine as well as two trucks. Hold four can be entered by penetrating partitions adjacent to the stone crusher. There are two compressors here while the second level has six trucks, a tractor, bulldozer and a steamroller.
