About Gosei Maru

The Gosei Maru lies on its port side near Uman in the Chuuk Lagoon. It's a 1,931 ton freighter with a 82 metres (269 feet) length and it lies at 31 metres (100 feet), 2.5 metres (8 feet) to top of wreck. The visibility is usually 20 metres (65 feet) One can navigate through the holds and torpedoes back to the stern and then the engine room. The boilers and walkways are charming as are all the wonderful reef fish and coral. Launched in 1937 form the Tsurumi Iron Works Dockyard at Yokohama then claimed by the Imperial Japanese Navy as a support ship for their subs. During Operation Hailstone the Gosei Maru was anchored in the Lagoon and attacked by dive bombers with a direct hit in the starboard near the first hold. There's a four bladed prop you can see and one can enter the hold through the torpedo hole it is empty aside from 44 gallon (200 litre) drums and artillery shells. The hull is badly damaged. You can swim to the bow through the torpedo hole. The bridge lies fore rather than midship. You can even see toilets and baths
