Emily Flying Boat

This flying boat lies in 15m near Tonoas in the Chuuk Lagoon and is 28 metres (92 feet) long, lying at a max depth of 15 metres (50 feet) with a 20 metres (65 feet) visibility. The wreck lies upside down with the tail broken but engines intact and no propeller bends thus indicating it sunk at the mooring. The Kawanishi Aircraft Company Limited built numerous craft during the war, of which the first was a large flying boat, the H6K Mavis based on the Sikorsky S.42. They were then commissioned something better and faster hence the H8K Emily flying boat. Their success was so good that other manufacturers had still not improved until after the war. Its wingspan was 125 feet with a 92 feet length. The Emily was an all aluminium high-wing aircraft with a deep fuselage. It had four engines and the plane was stablised on water by two large, fixed stabilising floats. Its armament of five 20 mm guns,four 7.7 mm guns, single 20 mm type 99 model 1 cannon, and two 1,764 lb aerial torpedoes or eight 551 lb bombs or depth charges earned it the nickname '�Flying Procupine' mostly used for bombing and reconnaissance. It is said that during Operation Hailstorm upon return to Chuuk it was attacked by US fighters and landed, sinking afterward due to bullet damage.
