About Xlendi Tunnel

The Xlendi Tunnel, also known as Xlendi Cave, is a dive site situated in the northern wall of Xlendi Bay in southwest Gozo. The tunnel is approximately 70 metres long and runs through the headland to the adjacent bay. The entrance to the tunnel from the Xlendi Bay side is at a depth of 5 metres, with a ledge rising to 3 metres inside. The depth then increases to 8 metres after some boulders, with the bottom covered in smooth rocks and shingle. The tunnel is considered safe for all levels of divers, including beginners, as it is possible to surface in many parts of the cave. The tunnel is not a true overhead environment, making it suitable for less experienced divers. The cave's ceiling has cracks that allow light to filter through, creating a beautiful effect when combined with the light from the exit. This makes the Xlendi Tunnel an excellent location for underwater photography.

The entry and exit point for the Xlendi Tunnel dive is on the opposite side of the bay. Divers can swim across the bay either on the surface or underwater, with the maximum depth of 10 metres at the bottom of the bay. However, divers should be cautious of surface traffic and swimmers when crossing Xlendi Bay. Visibility can be poor during rough sea conditions or after heavy rain, making it challenging to locate the cave entrance. Typically, visibility is much better on the other side of the tunnel. Upon exiting the tunnel on the seaward side, divers can turn left and follow the cliffs to the Xlendi Reef dive site.
