Wied iz-Zurrieq, also known as Blue Grotto, is a popular dive site located on the southern coast of Malta, near the town of Zurrieq. The site is renowned for its Blue Grotto caves and the Um El Faroud wreck, a 110-metre long Libyan oil tanker that was scuttled in 1998 and now sits upright on the sand at a maximum depth of 36 metres. Other notable dive sites in the area include East Reef, a wall with depths over 30 metres, and West Reef & Caves, which features drop-offs, ledges, gullies, boulders, and two caves. The area is also known for its night diving opportunities. The actual Blue Grotto is approximately 1 km east from Wied iz-Zurrieq valley and is usually only accessible by boat.
The dive site is equipped with multiple entry/exit points along the quay, which can be accessed either using stairs or a ramp. There are ladders in four spots along the quay and a slipway for easy entry/exit. However, divers should be aware of the potential for strong currents and busy boat traffic. The area is also popular for shore angling and mooring both tourist and fishing boats. Amenities such as restaurants, cafes, tourist shops, and public toilets are available during the day and evening in the summer, but close earlier in the winter. The site is suitable for beginners and offers opportunities for cave, reef, and wall diving.
