About West Reef & Caves

West Reef & Caves is a popular dive site located in Wied iz-Zurrieq, featuring a variety of underwater landscapes including drop-offs, ledges, gullies, boulders, and two notable caves - Bell Tower Cave and Mouse Hole Cave. The Bell Tower Cave has three entrances stacked on top of each other, with the deepest one at 27 metres, while the Mouse Hole Cave, named for its narrow entrance, is at a depth of 25 metres. Divers can also explore other caverns and holes in the reef, adding to the site's appeal. A unique feature of this site is a diving helmet statue, a full-sized replica of an old-fashioned brass diving helmet, located about 28 meters deep on a sandy bottom surrounded by seagrass fields. This underwater statue serves as a navigational landmark for divers heading to the nearby Um El Faroud wreck.

The helmet statue was installed on 3rd July 2005 by the local Maltese diving club ATLAM Sub Aqua Club to commemorate their 50th anniversary. The site is recommended for advanced divers due to its depth and complex underwater topography. The dive site type is categorized as Cave, Reef, and Wall. The maximum depth of the site is 25 meters. The site's visibility and current conditions, as well as possible marine life, are variable and should be checked before diving.
