About Um El Faroud

Um El Faroud is a renowned wreck dive located off the coast of Wied iz-Zurrieq in Malta. This artificial reef was created in 1998 when the Libyan oil tanker was scuttled after sustaining damage in an explosion. The wreck, which measures 110 meters in length and has a beam of approximately 16 meters, rests upright on a sandy bottom at depths ranging from 15 to 36 meters. Divers can explore the various penetration possibilities within the wreck, making it an ideal site for experienced wreck divers. In 2005-2006, Um El Faroud broke in two during a storm, resulting in the bow and stern sections moving apart. Despite this, the wreck remains a popular attraction, offering divers the chance to witness the unique alignment of the two sections. The dive site is easily accessible from the shore, with a diving helmet statue serving as a landmark halfway to the wreck. With a maximum depth of 36 meters and light currents, Um El Faroud is suitable for divers of all experience levels. Marine life in the area includes barracuda, scorpion fish, sea bream, and tuna. Overall, Um El Faroud provides an exciting and memorable diving experience for enthusiasts visiting Malta.
