About Mini Blue Hole

Mini Blue Hole is a natural rock formation dive site located in Marsaskala, approximately 700m northwest from Zonqor Point. The site features an underwater tunnel that connects the hole to the open sea, with the entrance just a few metres away from the dive's entry point. The tunnel is about 10m in length and the average depth in the tunnel is about 5m, with the bottom of Mini Blue Hole at 3m. The surrounding seabed is covered with rocks and boulders, with many small gullies and reefs that provide a habitat for octopus and moray. The maximum depth of the site is about 15m, making it suitable for all levels of divers.

Access to Mini Blue Hole is via an off-road track along the coastline connecting Marsaskala to Xghajra, with informal on-street parking located about 700m from the start of the track. From the parking area, a rough walking path leads over uneven and sharp rocks down to the shore. The entry/exit point to the dive site is located more than 70m away from the parking, with access to the sea over some gently sloping rocks and a shallow reef. The site is also suitable for swimming, snorkelling and free diving.

Dive Site Hazards

  • Remote Silt Disturbance — Silt can be disturbed metres away from the source.

  • Rapid Stress Escalation — Stress can increase sharply when visibility or navigation degrades.

  • High Cognitive Load Navigation — Complex passages increase mental workload even on a line.

  • Hidden Depth Variations — Complex reef topography can conceal depth changes, leading to unintended profile variations.

  • Distraction from Marine Activity — High fish activity can distract divers and delay depth or gas awareness.

  • Rapid Surge Direction Changes — Surge near reef structures can reverse direction quickly, pushing divers sideways into unexpected areas.
