About Lockheed P2V Neptune

The Lockheed P2V Neptune airplane wreck is a unique dive site located 500 metres offshore Bahar ic-Caghaq on the north-east coast of Malta. Resting at a depth of 32 metres, the wreck is situated on a seabed of sand and Posidonia seagrass meadows. The site consists of part of the fuselage without any major internal components and wing stubs with engine covers, with the rest of the wings half buried nearby in the sand. The airplane was scuttled in the late 1950s for a movie and was discovered in 2015. This dive site is recommended for advanced divers due to its depth and complexity.

The Lockheed P2V Neptune was a U.S. built maritime patrol aircraft and submarine hunter, operated by the Royal Air Force. This particular aircraft was damaged beyond repair during a routine landing at Luqa airport in Malta in 1956, and was subsequently sold for filming purposes in 1957. It was scuttled and used for underwater scenes in The Silent Enemy movie released in 1958. This dive site offers a unique opportunity to explore a piece of aviation and cinematic history beneath the waves.
