About HMS Olympus

HMS Olympus (N35) is a historical World War II submarine wreck located off the coast of Malta. This Odin- or O-class British submarine measures 86.5 m in length and 6 m in width. On 8th May 1942, the submarine struck a mine and sank a few kilometres off the Maltese coast, resulting in the loss of 89 lives with only 9 survivors. The wreck was discovered in 2011 and sits upright at a depth of approximately 130 m, remaining largely intact.

Managed by Heritage Malta, the HMS Olympus was opened to divers on 1st May 2019. However, diving this historical wreck requires a special permit. The dive site is recommended for technical divers due to its depth. Other notable submarine wreck dives in Malta include HMS Stubborn, scuttled in 1946, and HMS Urge, which met a similar fate to the Olympus in April 1942.
