About HM Drifter Eddy

HM Drifter Eddy is a World War II wreck located approximately 1.5 km off Fort St. Elmo in Valletta, Malta. This British vessel, built in 1918, was assigned to sweep for mines during the war but tragically sunk after hitting a mine in 1942. The wreck, which sits upright on a sandy seabed at a depth of 56 m, is about 27 m in length. A large hole in the hull on the starboard side, where the mine hit, allows divers to swim into the hold. However, most of the wooden superstructure has collapsed and visibility can quickly reduce to zero due to the silt inside the wreck.

Due to its depth and location near the busy Grand Harbour, the site is suitable only for very experienced and technical divers. The wreck was discovered on 26th October 1995 and serves as a poignant reminder of the vessel's history and the eight crew members who lost their lives. Despite the challenging conditions, divers who visit the site can appreciate the historical significance of the HM Drifter Eddy and its role in World War II.
