About Blue Hole

The Blue Hole in Dwerja, Malta, is a renowned scuba diving site known for its unique circular rock formation and diverse marine life. This sinkhole, approximately ten metres wide and five metres across, is a sheltered pool protected by a fringe of rock, making it a safe entry and exit point for divers. The depth of the Blue Hole is about 15 metres, with an underwater window leading to the open sea at a depth of 9 metres. The walls of the hole are adorned with colourful coral tubeworms, sponges, and other small marine life, while the exterior features a large number of boulders. The site is often dived in the afternoon when winds start to pick up and other dive sites become less accessible.

The Blue Hole is typically combined with diving at the Azure Reef or Coral Gardens, and can also be accessed from the Inland Sea. Despite requiring a 200-metre walk over a rocky shore to reach, the dive site is well worth the effort. The maximum depth is 25 metres, with an approximate maximum visibility of 30 metres. The current is light, making it suitable for experienced divers. The possible marine life is varied, and the dive site type is classified as a reef and cave. The Blue Hole is located near Gozo.
