About Azure Reef

Azure Reef is a unique dive site located on the west coast of Gozo, in Dwejra. It was formed after the collapse of the Azure Window in a heavy storm in March 2017. The dive site starts just below the surface and extends to depths over 40 metres, featuring large boulders and sharp edges. The barren moonscape is slowly being colonized by algae and marine life, making it an interesting site for divers. There are swim-throughs below and between the boulders, but caution is advised as the rocks could still split and shift. The recommended entry/exit point for this dive is through the Blue Hole, another beautiful dive site. The recommended experience level for this dive is advanced due to the depth and changing conditions.

The Azure Window was one of the most famous tourist attractions on the Maltese islands, and its collapse has created a new and dynamic underwater landscape. Divers can still see plants that were previously growing on the arch above the surface. From Azure Reef, divers can continue to the nearby Coral Gardens. For those missing the Azure Window, there is another similar but lesser-known archway in Gozo, Wied il-Mielah Window, which is also a very nice dive site. The maximum depth of Azure Reef is 40 metres. The dive site type is a reef.
