About U-559

The U 559 was a German Submarine also known as The Unterseeboot. This was a Type VIIC submarine that was serving a fight against the Axis powers in WW11. She was under the command of Captain Hans Heidtmann which happened to be her only commander during her role in WW11. On 30 October 1942 allied forces reports her surfacing and 5 destroyers were deployed including several aircraft. After a short while she was located and depth charges that has been layed down caused her pressure hull to damage and she was forced to re-suface. At this time the allieds opened fire, damaging her conning tower. The crew of the U 559 open petlocks and sea valves in order to scuttle the submarine before abandoning it. Commander Hans Heidtmann surrenderd the submarine and was taken aboard by the Petard Destroyer with all the crew members. 3 Crew members of the Petard dove into the water and made their way to the U 559 in order to search for important documents. While inside, the submarine suddenly heeled over and sank taken two members of the Petard with her. This dive is deep and only recommended for advanced and technical divers. very thrilling !
