About Punta Arena Canyons

Just a short boat ride away from the shore, this dive site is only for the more advanced scuba divers. The site is often unable to be dived during rough weather conditions due to the path one takes in reaching the dive site. Punta Arena Canyons consists of a deep canyon with various caves and tunnels. The best diving is located below 25 meters and thus it is advised to be familiar with deep diving when diving this site. The site has some amazing topography with fascinating rock formations covered in a number of corals. Marine life here is also very good with Barracuda, Grouper, Lobster, Turtles, Jewfish and even Nurse Sharks all present.

Dive Site Hazards

  • Remote Silt Disturbance — Silt can be disturbed metres away from the source.

  • Rapid Stress Escalation — Stress can increase sharply when visibility or navigation degrades.

  • High Cognitive Load Navigation — Complex passages increase mental workload even on a line.

  • Bubble Trapping Under Overhangs — Rock overhangs can trap exhaled bubbles, reducing visibility and causing disorientation.

  • Reflected Surge Patterns — Surge reflecting off rock faces can create irregular and unpredictable water movement.

  • Current Funnel Effect — Narrow gaps between rocks can accelerate water flow unexpectedly.
