About SS Lake Illawarra

In the mid 70's Captain Pelc approached the Tasman Bridge at the harbour off Rosney Point a little too fast. The attempt to straighten out went in the opposite direction and he headed for the mud flats another series of panicky attempts to correct her course resulted in collision with the bridge, part of which buckled under the two pylons that were struck. The city struggled for a time without the bridge but it has since been repaired and the wreck is easy to locate. The vis is really bad and it's a tough site, best done by experienced tech divers. Permission is required from Port Control and the contents are protected. The wreck can be dived from 24m down to 30 and penetration is not recommended unless experience levels are adequate. Use a sounder to locate it because you'll miss it due to the vis if you dive it without proper location.
