Clovelly Pool

This area is 8km east from the heart of Sydney home to the popular Gordon's Bay (Thompsons Bay), Clovelly Pool and Shark Point. The bay itself is long and narrow with beach in its nook and the pool which appears different now from its original layout. This pool's original topography was changed by rocks placed there which created a closed and protected area. The visibility is excellent. Be aware that Clovelly Pool is completely closed off by the City Council between October and March during the day but can be accessed for night dives. Daytime entry during these times will result in being fined and accessing the site from any other angle, including on the way back from Shark point has perilous risks upon exit. When you access the dive site park at the left hand side of the parking lot at the end of Clovelly Road. It's very busy in summer due to the popularity of the night dives. This will lead you to the southern end of the pool. If it slow tide don't take the first stairs, rather go for the third or second and watch out for their slipperiness. At high tide its great because you can just jump in but not giant stride style as its not deep enough best just a shallow flop. The site has two separate dives inside the pool and the area outside of it. Once you're in head for the middle of it and descend to 3m then go east. It deepens as you go to 6m max. The path along here is anti clockwise with the rocks to the right. There is plenty of marine life here to keep you busy for quite some time. Keep along the sand edge where the rock sizes get larger, there are some drums and steel parts before the rock laden bottom. This completes the circle after which you can cut straight across. The rocks, caverns and swim throughs are perfect for honing your skills. Numerous creatures hide in the bottom soil including sole and wobbegong sharks. The ideal location of the site means it's protected so even though there are nooks and crannies you can't get lost. As it is an enclosed area, you can't really get lost, but take care if you swim out of the pool and the surges risk you ending up against the rocks with the currents when the is low. The outer part of the dive is accessed at the same spot accept you swim straight across and over the wall. The tides make the call here when they are high its best not to do the dive. A way out there will be rocks and wall where the depth is 8m. There's a kelp bed as well just before a second drop off of 11m where a series of overhangs house an array of marine creatures. This spot in the dive is a about 15min in. Follow the wall in a NE direction until it disappears and then turn around and head back following the lights back to the pool.
