About Catalina Cove

Catalina Cove is slightly north of the more popular Boca Catalina. Very easy access for all levels and it is a great snorkelling spot. There are no facilities here, but there are a couple of nice shades from the Sun. It is great if you are a beginner as it is generally shallow and very good right off shore. From the beach, head into the water anywhere it looks easy. Entry is quite rocky. An option though is to enter just slightly farther south at Boca Catalina where there is a nice white sand beach and then simply swim along the rocky coastline towards the north. Directions: Head to the North part of the island. About 600 m north of the Northern 1B 2B intersection, make a left turn on the paved road. You'll see the beach directly in front of you.

Dive Site Hazards

  • Bubble Trapping Under Overhangs — Rock overhangs can trap exhaled bubbles, reducing visibility and causing disorientation.

  • Reflected Surge Patterns — Surge reflecting off rock faces can create irregular and unpredictable water movement.

  • Current Funnel Effect — Narrow gaps between rocks can accelerate water flow unexpectedly.

  • Hidden Depth Variations — Complex reef topography can conceal depth changes, leading to unintended profile variations.

  • Distraction from Marine Activity — High fish activity can distract divers and delay depth or gas awareness.

  • Rapid Surge Direction Changes — Surge near reef structures can reverse direction quickly, pushing divers sideways into unexpected areas.
