About Jettia's Wreck

The Jettias Wreck, a captivating dive site located just west of Sandals Grande Antigua, offers a unique underwater exploration opportunity. This site is the final resting place of an old French steam freighter, which sank back in 1817, making it one of the most intriguing and oldest shipwrecks off the Antigua coast. Resting at a depth of about 25 meters, the wreck is largely fragmented, with its remains scattered across the ocean floor in various sections.

This historical maritime relic has been transformed into a thriving marine habitat over the centuries. The wreckage, although broken, is adorned with fascinating marine growth, including vibrant and colorful corals. Diving at the Jettias Wreck not only allows for an exploration of a piece of maritime history but also provides a window into the diverse marine life that has made this wreck their home. Divers can expect to see an abundance of fish around the wreck, including parrotfish, grunts, hogfish, snapper, barracuda, and blue tangs, among others. The variety of fish life here is a testament to the rich biodiversity that such wrecks can support.

The structure of the wreck itself, divided into the bow, the boiler, the engine, and the stern, offers divers a chance to explore different aspects of the ship's anatomy. Each section of the wreck presents a unique underwater landscape, filled with historical intrigue and natural beauty. As one of the top dive sites on the island, the Jettias Wreck is a must-visit for divers interested in wreck diving and experiencing the fusion of historical wreckage with a vibrant underwater ecosystem.
